Welcome - my name is Kevin Klinkenberg, and this site "The Messy City" is my blog and company website. I started blogging on urban planning and design issues in 2007, and began working in the field in 1993. Please feel free to connect with me on any of the social media sites listed here. Thanks for reading.

A new name

Since I switched this blog over from my previous blog (New Urbanism Blog) I've wrestled with what to call it. I knew that "Kevin Klinkenberg's Urban Design Blog" was a mouthful and just a placeholder. I'm grateful for all the feedback and ideas, and especially that so many people like the new format.

So, after much discussion I've settled on calling this "Walking the Walk," with the subtitle "Urban design from the front lines," For me, the name captures a couple of essential and recurring themes. One theme is obviously the importance of walking and walkable places - that's obvious to anyone who even occasionally visits this space. But secondly, what I most enjoy is going beyond the talking points and diving into ideas and solutions. While I do enjoy reading people who are provocative just for the sake of being provocative, that is not me. I'll not hesitate to call something or someone out if need be, but I've always felt that a professional's job is to go further and offer solutions. For me, it's always been more important to answer the question, "if not this, then what?" I'll never shy away from offering up what I think the solutions are on this site, and I look forward to debating those with all of you.

Thanks to all - don't forget to comment on pieces or contact me privately.
