You may think of Palm Beach, FL as home to some of the country's ultra-rich. I like to think of it as home to one of America's most unique and memorable main streets. And more importantly, it's one that could be so easily duplicated in numerous cities and towns simply by more thoughtful design. Worth Avenue is the historic heart of Palm Beach, with its beautiful, palm-tree lined (and one-way) street. Most interesting, however, is the network of paseos and courtyards that run between and behind the buildings that face the street. The paseos are the private yin to the public yang of the street, and provide a series of moments that make this more than just a place to shop.
It's easy to get lost in the names on the storefronts, and imagine that this is only a playground for a select few that can afford to shop here. But look a little more closely, and you'll see that it's nothing more than a kit of parts of simple buildings with some select details, all cleverly assembled into a delightful walking experience.
